Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between laminated reels and OSB reels?
Laminated reels are intended for returnable or nonreturnable packaging for wire, cable and rope products. Flange thickness, arbor hole, optional cable slot (start hole), and drive pin hole can be tailored to meet your specific requirements. Flanges are made of locally sourced SPF lumber. Barrel staves can be machine cut to the required curvature and thickness. Reels are bored to customers specifications for drive, tie-off and start holes. OSB and plywood reels are an economical solution for a wide range of light weight wire and cable applications. Flanges are manufactured from OSB or plywood dependent on application type. Fiber tubing or wood stave (lathe) drum options are available dependent on application type.
Are wooden reels or steel reels better for bulk cable handling?
For decades, wooden reels have been the standard in most industries. Depending on the product and environment, wooden reels (often called “spools” or “drums”) offer the best ROI (return on investment) for most applications. Steel reels, which are most commonly used in industries that require product protection from harsher environments, are quickly becoming a solid option for a wide range of applications.
There is no “one size fits all” solution in the reels world. When you work with Oso Manufacturing, you work with a team of experts that will help find the right solution for your unique reel needs.
How do I know what size reel I need for my product?
Selection of proper reel (spool) size depends on the length and overall diameter (O.D.) of the cable, wire or rope to be rewound. A reel not matched to the weight of the product wound on it may be damaged during shipment.
All wire, cable and rope have a minimum safe bending radius. If cable is subjected to bends sharper than the minimum radius, damage to the material is possible.
